A Container
Garden

The garden for kids is a great way to learn about life and have fun growing your very own plants and vegetables, not to mention exploring and playing games in the fresh air.

Even if you don’t have much garden space, our gardening tips will help you and your little ones have all kinds of fun digging, creating and growing. Just remember to wash your hands and fingernails thoroughly afterwards.

IN THE GARDEN

Garden’s are great fun for children to run around in the fresh air, explore and get messy. They’re also a great place to learn about nature, wildlife and the environment. So why not involve children in planting both indoors and outdoors, depending on the time of year plant bulbs or sunflower seeds, or set up a small container for vegetables such as potatoes, beans or peas.

This is a great way to teach children about how plants need water to grow, and to remind children to wash their hands when they have finished planting. Talk about how water is a precious resource and when it’s very hot weather sometimes we don’t have very much. It’s a good way to remind children that taps should always be turned off after they have washed their hands so that no water is wasted. Water could also be collected from hand washing to use to water areas of the garden most in need.

Making a container garden

Using a seed tray or shallow food container encourage the children to create their own gardens, using a selection of materials for garden pathways, grassy areas, and flowers.

Using a small yoghurt pot, plant cress seeds and place on top of a flat surface area of the container garden. Once complete talk with the children about whether they need to wash their hands. Explain that even though they might not look dirty, stones leaves and twigs that have been outside will still harbour germs.
